Gigs of the Week: Low at Yugong Yishan, XP Closing Parties
Lots of great gigs to check out this weekend, especially if you are a fan of indie, or those other more noisy styles of music often featured at XP. This will be your last chance to check this place out before it fades into the ether on July 5. Read about how the end to this vital Beijing venue came about here.
July 3: Low
Droned out indie rockers, Low, will loudly hover on the Yugong stage this Friday, with their peculiar style of washed out weirdness. These guys have been at it since 1993, and their edge is only getting sharper, and sound more relevant. Make sure to show these seasoned veterans a warm Beijing welcome. RMB 220, RMB 180 (advance). 9pm. Yugong Yishan
XP Closing Weekend
While we are overwhelmed with grief at the TBJ office to be loosing such an important institution for Beijing’s other music, this sounds like a pretty groovy way to celebrate its demise. Make sure to check it out this weekend.
July 3: Cold Neo Showcase
Friday night will feature a handful of locals, on the rock end of the musical spectrum, who have greatly benefited from having a venue like XP to tweak their sounds and become the acts that they are today. Sadly, after the gig, all of these bands will be put out to pasture, now that they are without a suitable venue (just kidding). Featuring The Eat Solaris, Elenore, Lonely Leary, Luv Plastik, and She Never Sings Our Songs. RMB 50. 8.30pm
July 4: The Yours, The Fuzz, White+, Streets Kill Strange Animals
On Saturday, XP will host a bevy of shining stars from the Maybe Mars catalogue. If you weren’t aware, XP is the literal home to Maybe Mars, with their offices just upstairs. Bands in attendance will be Hong Kong noise rockers The Yours, along with Xi’an’s The Fuzz, and locals White+, and Streets Kill Strange Animals. RMB 50. 9pm
July 5: Final Zoomin' Night at XP
In their final hours, things will get more noisy than emotional as Zhu Wenbo, organizer of the weekly Zoomin’ Night, brings together a crew of highly dissonant musicians to sonically crush the place into oblivion. This long day of music will feature A Ming, Deng Chenglong, Ding Chenchen, Liu Lu, Vavabond, and many more. Free. 4pm
