We're Happy and We Know It: Beijing Is China's Happiest City, Again

Next time the Beijing blues overtake you, just remember this: for the fifth year in a row, Beijing is the happiest city in China.

According to "research," Beijing beat out rival Shanghai and non-urban entity Jiangsu province for the conviviality cup.

Places four through 10 went to: Tianjin, Zhenjiang, Guangdong, Liaoning, Shandong, Fujian and Inner Mongolia. Students from Tianjin's Nankai University conducted the survey. No mention of which geographical unit placed 30th out of China's 30 directly-administered cities, provinces, and autonomous regions, although the survey was not conducted based on strict geographic borders.

A total of 44 criteria were used to determine the rankings, including high school enrollment rate, public cultural venues, and medical coverage.

Beijing wears the crown for the fifth year in a row. Be sure to remind your friends in Shanghai that they're not as happy as you are, not even when they hosted the World Expo in 2010.

"Students from Tianjin's Nankai University conducted the survey..."

Hmm... As if the survey topic itself weren't enough to make one roll one's eyes...

And I'm curious to know how those 44 criteria were selected. I'm sure that there's no chance that a criterion was selected based on how well Beijing would score...
