Get Your Wiener On at Must Guette

Must Guette's concept – gourmet bagels and hot dogs – is guaranteed to raise some eyebrows, but, at the least, it's committed to the idea of upscaling the two.

Take, for example, its RMB 298 "Lobster My Dog." There's little point in denying that a hot dog with a whole Canadian lobster on it isn't gourmet, and the price reflects that. Sadly, I have yet to try it, but if any of you souls are brave (or rich) enough to try it, please do let us know how it is.

I did try a cheese bagel, which comes with a hamburger patty and deep-fried Brie (RMB 78). It was pleasant, but the flavors were oddly flat. Plus, I found the bagel ended up just being a hamburger bun with a hole in it, which made for more leakage than I'd like.

The fries (RMB 28) were good, though they were on the starchier side. The highlight of the night was the jars of free cream cheese spreads at the sauce bar, which had us hooting and hollering. With choices like avocado or crab cream cheese, it's certainly easy enough to get your money's worth. I'd recommend passing on the gravy (RMB 10) and just going for the free sauces.

The hot dogs, which start at RMB 45, come loaded with goodies, but value is an issue here. The wieners themselves are plenty long enough (yes, I know, that's what she said), but at these prices, I expect more. After all, man doesn't live on sausage alone.

If you're looking for a comparison, Must Guette bears a lot of resemblance to Let's Burger Plus. They both have similar ordering methods (paper menus with checkboxes), sauce bars (one of my favorite things about them) and offer upscaled versions of Western diner food. The interior decoration is even in the same vein.

Personally, I'd be more likely to go to Let's Burger, but Must Guette's cream cheese jars will be calling me back from time to time.
