Going Underground: Weigongcun, Line 4
“Going Underground” is a regular magazine column in which we explore the neighborhoods surrounding subway stations.
SELLING POINT
Sandwiched between the Beijing Institute of Technology and Beijing Foreign Studies University, Weigongcun is filled with student-friendly venues, all within walking distance of the subway stop.
SIP
From Exit D, head west down Weigongcun Lu. After a fair amount of walking, you’ll find some bars that are well worth the exercise. By now, you’ve probably worked up a powerful thirst. Check out the mixed drinks at Magic Pub, play board games at 65˚Café & Bar or just glower in the dark at Angel Bar. If you’re in the mood for coffee, Sculpting in Time or Cancha Coffee will perk you up properly.
EAT
If you’re not satisfied with the roasted hazelnuts, stinky tofu and jianbing offered by the street food vendors, head over to Shuzhengyuan Hot Pot, which is quite popular with the locals. Also in the area is The Old Bike Café, which has gotten some good press for its burgers and onion rings.
STROLL
If you walk east down Xueyuan Nanlu for another ten minutes, you’ll discover a whole host of treasures. Treat your feet to a rubdown at Shenyu Foot Massage or have your hair styled at Echo.T Hair Salon. Walk south down Zhongguancun Nandajie and have a look at Let’s Coffee, a cafe and clothing/accessories shop.
