Going Underground: Renmin University, Line 4
“Going Underground” is a regular magazine column in which we explore the neighborhoods surrounding subway stations.
SELLING POINT
Want all the glamour of being a student without all the homework? Take the subway to Renmin University (aka “Renda,” aka the People’s University of China). Just look for the swarms of loud, heavy-set Chinese women, always carrying a baby – and a purse full of fake student IDs.
BROWSE
Take a peek in Renda’s libraries (old and new) and grab a seat in a study room if you’re looking to get some work done in a comfortable environment without the pressure of having to buy a coffee or scone. Their selection of novels and magazines is quite decent. If reading doesn’t suit you, check out Huaxing UME Cineplex for the latest movies. There’s good shopping to be found at hole-in-thewall places a few steps away from Exit A2 of the subway station. Eric Ge and Sijia Wardrobe both stock vintage designs and classy looks at low costs.
GRAZE
Shuangyushu San Jie offers you Mistica Pizza, a courtyard of several eateries where you can find some fine dumplings. Drink some milk tea from the ICCI stand next door and try out Wangji Donkey Meat Huoshao or Gobi Rice Noodles.
ENGAGE
Lost in translation or in need of a confidence boost? Seek out the university’s “English Corner ” on Fridays from 7-10pm. If you stop to smile and chat, the Chinese students will be more than happy to laugh at any joke you have to tell.
