Going Underground: Dawanglu, Line 1
“Going Underground” is a regular magazine column in which we explore the neighborhoods surrounding subway stations.
LEARN
The China Businessman Museum (east of the subway station) is a must for anyone who wants to get ahead. Get schooled by the masters for much less than an MBA will set you back.
SHOP
More of a must-see than Burberry’s flagship store is Dongjiao Market. This sprawling wholesale hub is an Aladdin’s cave of wonder, if Aladdin were to drive a hard bargain and offer a fine line in furniture. More bargains can be found at the Guanghua Lu branches of Select and Jimmy & Tommy Foreign Trade Store. Go with the attitude that you might find nothing, and you’ll probably come back with some designer bargains. Prepare for a browse.
EAT
You can’t do better than Nobu. Go for the signature black cod and then invest in the restaurant (it’ll make you feel like Robert De Niro). Next door, Shin Kong Place has an excellent food court that is the envy of more parochial shopping centers. The mall also has a Burger King and Hollywood – and with Shake ‘Em Buns close by, you can stage your own burger war.
