Sing For Your Supper: SG Song

You’ll find no MSG here – that’s because SG Song’s owner allegedly hates the stuff. So rest assured that the flavor of their spicy kimchi and tofu stew (RMB 48) comes from 100 percent not-faking-it funkiness.

Not every dish will win you over – you may find fault with the pan-fried chicken with cheese (somewhat chewy) or the oyster pancakes (rather oily).

However, SG scores highly for its Japanese-influenced black cod (RMB 98); marinated in soy sauce and braised until tender and savory, the generous portion is paired with candied lotus root. And don’t miss the grilled pork belly (RMB 68), which is redolent of ginger, and accompanied by aromatic perilla leaves for wrapping. For dessert, try the warm purple yam paste with soft ginkgo nuts, or homemade sesame ice cream.
