New Tallest Building Proposed for Beijing’s CBD

The CBD is set to possibly get a new “tallest” landmark according to Beijing Daily (Chinese only), with the proposed 500 meter tall China Zun tower set to beat the China World Trade Center Tower by 170 meters.

According to a Beijing Daily report, CITIC Group won the bid for the land China Zun will be built on yesterday, paying a whopping RMB 6.3 billion for the site on Guanghua Lu. No details are provided as to the exact location.

The article says the tower’s “design spirit” is based on ancient Chinese vessels known as zun – you can see an example in the image below. Apparently the design evokes “oriental mystery and national elegance.”

Based on the current design, China Zun will have 118 storeys above ground and 4 storeys underground, and will include offices, apartments and a hotel. Plans also include a 2.5 km underground road system designed to “ease traffic pressure aboveground.”

Don’t hold your breath however – the tower isn’t due to be unveiled until around 2016.

Looks nice, but in my opinion they should clear up the neighbouring CCTV building first before planning new adventures... I was passing by there some weeks ago, and it's unbelievable that, after two years, there is no sign of, well, of whatever they are planning to do. Kind of a shame, right?

they are making some progress on the pantlegs ... just this month they were testing the lights, as blogger Jim Gourley writes about on his blog, "Absurdity, Allegory and China: The Kingdom from another angle":
