Classy Without Being Stuffy: Atmosphere Bar Opens in China World

Like an 80th-floor evolution of the popular lounge Centro, Atmosphere pulls off classy without being stuffy. The unmistakable aroma of cigar smoke is an immediate clue – cigar smoking goes on here. Day and night, business types lounge around puffing on Cubans and Dominicans, and the drinks list even includes a number of specially paired “cigar cocktails” (RMB 75).

You don’t need a suit or man-purse to feel comfortable here, though. The cocktail selection offers depth rather than excessive choice, including punchy classics like the Pegu Club, experimental inventions like manager Charly Kusaksizoglu’s Basil & Mango, and RMB 125 champagne cocktails. Atmosphere is also steadily building what looks like one of Beijing’s best whisky collections (from RMB 65).

The result is that this bar has more going for it than just a staggering, birds-eye view of Beijing.

On most nights, the "view" is limited to whatever is stuck on the outside of the windows. For the 20 nights a year when the pollution is not overwhelming, the view is quite nice.

The prices are also set to at least double any day now. So you can take those bargain basement teasers and file them as history.
