Are You Fit for the Great Wall Charity Challenge?
The sea is a harsh mistress but she becomes even less forgiving when after a 40km sail you’re faced with a run along the Great Wall for 12km and then a climb to its zenith. That’s exactly what’s going to happen to the competitors in the Great Wall Charity Challenge (Oct 9) organized by Beijing Sailing Centre (BSC). If that grueling trio of activities doesn’t sound like a recipe for injury or post-traumatic stress, you should probably sign up to participate.
BSC is looking for sailors (and runners and climbers) seeking a chance to test themselves. Experience isn’t really an issue as full training for the sailing aspect is provided but you’ll definitely need to be willing to get wet – and then sweat – for a good cause.
The good cause in this case is Shunyi-based charity Roundabout – specifically, a project that raises funds for a village that cares for children with cystic fibrosis. Participants in the challenge are responsible for raising their own sponsorship – or if they are charitably inclined, paying it themselves.
The event is not just for the participating teams of four but also for friends, family and supporters. Admittedly, the timetable for non-competitors is a little easier going. While the sailors brave the coast, spectators are bused to the two checkpoints on the race to Laolongtou to cheer competitors on. After taking in a spot of lunch, the onlookers see the boats abandoned as the teams begin the 12km slog to the Great Wall’s peak at Jiaoshan. Finally, spectators will take the cable car to arrive at the finish line before the challenge’s dramatic climax.
Once all that is done and dusted, the celebrations can begin – and there’s few who know how to party like sailors. The following day, all spectators and participants are invited to have a go at sailing before returning to Beijing. A weekend of healthy competition, sailing, beers and barbecue make for an entertaining family event that will also make life better for those not so healthy. If that’s not worth getting a bit wet for, then what is?
