Remembering Qinghai: National Day of Mourning Today

Today is an official day of mourning for the more than 2,000 victims of the Qinghai earthquake. Flags will fly at half mast around the nation and at Chinese embassies and consulates around the world.

Yesterday China Daily reported: "The death toll has climbed to 2,046 from a devastating earthquake in northwest China's Qinghai Province, with 193 people still missing... As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, the 7.1-magnitude quake, which struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu last Wednesday, has also left 12,135 injured, of which 1,434 are in serious condition."

The UK Telegraph's Malcolm Moore just returned from the disaster area and has placed his photographs on Flickr. You can view them here. The pictures give some idea of the devastation in the area. Moore estimates "80 per cent to 90 per cent of the victims were Tibetans."

Yugong Yishan and Club Football have contacted the Beijinger to tell us their events today are canceled, but most recreational activities in Beijing have been canceled or postponed as a mark of respect. Mako Live House have postponed their benefit scheduled for tonight to tomorrow.

If you would like to help with disaster relief, Roundabout are still looking for donations to assist those in the eathquake zone.
