We live around the corner from Fu Tapas & Wine and watched with great curiosity as the place was designed and decorated. We've now visited twice and are very impressed. Friendly faces at the door. Expertly trained waitstaff. Great environment. Incredible food.
On our first visit we had the beef carpaccio, feta salad, and gnocchi. All were delicious, though the gnocchi was a little too salty for my taste. Serving the carpaccio on a Parmesan cracker is a stroke of genius.
On our second visit we ordered the beef carpaccio again, salmon couscous sushi, and seared tuna. We noticed that the beef carpaccio was missing both the asparagus and mozzarella that accompanied it the first time, but in its place was an extra portion of beef carpaccio (which was definitely ok by me!). The salmon couscous beet "sushi" was a bit of a miss for me. I understand the intention, but the dish didn't compare in flavor to the other items, and didn't quite come together for me. Each of its elements were a bit too far removed from actual sushi (which I love) to work for me. The seared tuna is spectacular.
We'll be back soon for the tenderloin, scallops and another serving (or two) of beef carpaccio. I want the chef to know that this exactly the kind of food we've been hoping for in Gulou.
The Beijinger's review quotes the owner as having an eye for detail. I agree completely. Every corner of the restaurant has been thought out in advance. Even the texture and temperature of the free pre-meal bread is perfect. The one thing that I think needs improvement is the minimalist, hard-to-read menu. The small font, printed on vertical half-sized A4 strips, is difficult to see in the dark and does not tell a story nor lead the eye.
The prices aren't for everyone. We skipped the set menu (500 for two) and paid between 300 and 400 for each a la carte experience.
Minor complaints and menu gripes aside, we are two very impressed customers, and are pleased to offer five stars. Thank you, Fu Tapas & Wine. We'll be back soon and often.
