There is a pretty big swing between people who hate the beer here and leave 1 star reviews and people who think it's god's gift to man. It's just average. There are better breweries in the city but Slow Boat's beers aren't offensive or "a disgrace" or even 1 star. They just aren't amazing either. What's nice about Slow Boat is that 1) the beers are just good enough to offer respite from the Yanjing/Qingdao/Harbin trifecta (the IPA is one of the better ones), 2) the Taproom is close to my apartment and in a "cool" part of town so you can convince your friends to join you and 3) you can find their beers on tap in other restaurants and bars around the city. That's an initiative I wish some of the other breweries would take up! These guys have their hearts in the right place and the beer is decent, it's not garbage. I am fine to keep drinking it rather than take a trip to Oregon or whatever.
However, the thing that keeps me away from their taproom is not the beer. It's the girl who works the bar. I know you are working at a hip, new brewery in a coooool Beijing hutong but please. An attitude check is in order. About a month ago, I was waiting on line with some friends for the Tuesday night special and the clock struck 10 just as we were next in line. She loudly announced that we were too late to get the special (others from our group had already ordered a round so it's not like we were trying to "cheat" and order past the special). Fortunately another manager was at the bar and told her, "Hey, I saw them waiting in line" to which she replied, "Ugh, you're actually GIVING it to them?" before rolling her eyes and turning away. What the hell, right? Another time she refused to give change to my friend because she "didn't have it" so she ended up paying 10 yuan more for the beers she bought. I don't know what this girl's deal is but everyone else there seems to be totally chill and nice. Maybe the owners can give her some more beer so she chills out too? Or assign her something else to do that doesn't involve dealing with any customers at all ever? Until then I'm happy to just get Slow Boat elsewhere. 3.5 stars for the beer, 1 star for "service" at the taproom.
EDITED: I received a very kind e-mail from one of the founders of Slow Boat and am amending my review in response. It's wonderful to see that there are people who care just as much about their establishment's service as they do about product quality. Because I averaged my review based on the beer and the service, I am changing my star rating to 4 and look forward to my next visit to the Taproom.

Re: Average/acceptable beers but bad-attitude bar lady is ...
Sorry, I should clarify that there is just one 1-star review on the Beijinger but Cityweekend has some similarly low star reviews. It's not THAT bad!
Re: Average/acceptable beers but bad-attitude bar lady is ...
City Weekend's low reviews are from people who only tried one or two of the beers, as they admitted. There are 12 beers to choose from! If I just drank the dark beers, I would say I didn't like it, but I love the Wheat, Honey, and American Porters.
Anyway, give 'em another shot and see if the service is better. Every new bar has hiccups in the first several months.

I bet I know which girl you are talking about. I've been a bit put off by her attitude before, but everyone else is amazing, so it is easy to overlook.
They always have discounted beer or something fun going on at Slow Boat, so it's a fun place to meet up with friends. Give them another shot, and send them an email. I bet they would make things right.
