Hey, anybody know where the authentic Korean food in Wudaokou is? I've been swinging and missing out there for a while. That small Korean food street area--dongwangzhuang--about a 20-minute walk from the subway station closed about six months ago. I don't live in Wudaokou, and my better half is crazy about Korean food. Asking for help from anyone in the know. Requirements would be:

1)Authentic(ex: kim-chi should have power, water given out, etc.)

2)Run by an older person of Korean heritage, who is visibly on site

3)Older person is hopefully "auntie"-type lady. Type who knows and cares about food preparation, knows good side dishes, is strict on staff, etc.

4)Restaurant is not so large that food quality suffers. Therefore, the smaller the better

5)Korean students go there. This ensures most of the aforementioned requirements

We usually get a couple of soups and a couple of plates of meat to be barbecued. Any help or suggestions would be great. Cheers, all

Have you been to Tantan Dalu? It's on the 4th floor of that KFC/Tous Les Jour building on the Northwest side of that main WDK intersection. (Sorry, just realized it's not yet in our directory, which I'm fixing now, but for now here's the Dianping link.) It's pretty big, not really mom and pop, but the food is pretty solid.

For everything you're describing, the closest I've come to is Huoluhuo, but you have to go to the one in Wangjing. The one in WDK is nowhere near as good. Wangjing Huoluhuo has an older Korean man overseeing it most of the time (at least that was the case a couple years ago when I used to frequent it), and the Wangjing crowd is more families and older businesspeople than students, but this place is legit. Sometimes you have to ask for the standard red kimchi because they default to the white variety, but they'll happily give it when you ask.

Also, beware the wait. Can take a long, long time. If you really love Korean BBQ, this is definitely worth a trek once in awhile even if you'd consider Wangjing far.

Hey, thanks for the reply, Marilyn(great name--not enough Marilyns, IMO).

Yeah, I figure Wudaokou is better than Wangjing as students generally only care about taste and price. Families and businessmen are often more encumbered by a lack of time, larger numbers, and service and environment requirements. I will try to check out that Wangjing place you suggested, though.

That Wudaokou building you mentioned has two, or more, large Korean restaurants. I checked out the one on the third floor but my intuition told me it was faking the Korean. I ate at the one on the fourth floor, but the sides were depressing(one was cold French fries—yes, cold French fries!). The mains were forgettable, though not offensive.

I am confident, having found them in the not-distant past, that there are good Korean mom-and-pops serving the Wudaokou student community. I asked online here hoping I might hook a student in the know. This method is certainly less alarming than my random stopping of Asian men in baseball hats outside the Wudaokou subway station. (They all seemed too scared to give me restaurant advice—ooh, sadly understandable).

Anyway, cheers
