On the Radar: Katchup and Martini Reopen + Pop-Up Cocktails in Beixinqiao

A hutong burger legend returns with some very ketchup-inspired new digs, plus Martini gets gold in a new garden and shifter has a pop-up at self coffee. Read on for the lowdown.

Katchup Reopens at New Location

Legendary hutong burger joint Katchup has reopened after closing for renovations late last year. The remodeling included a move to a brand new location, with the restaurant now situated on Di’anmenwai Dajie not too far from the east entrance of Shichahai.

The new venue is nice and sleek, with red and yellow seating as well as a giant wall filled with bottles of Heinz ketchup, mustard, and some blue sauce – if you couldn’t tell they really love their ketchup and mustard here (and blue sauce). They've got the same classic Katchup menu though, with a favorite being their Bacon Cheeseburger (RMB 78), topped with crisp but not too crisp bacon and Katchup’s signature salt and pepper seasoned beef.

Martini 2.0 Now in Soft Opening

The rooftop of Martini at Nali Patio might be long gone, but the Mediterranean-themed nightlife spot has already found a new home and is settling in quite nicely. The rooftop has been traded in for a large garden space, with a bar, seating areas, and everything done up all golden, curvy, and nice, and the indoor dining area is decorated with murals paying homage to the old Martini. They've also revamped their menu with some new selections fit for summer like cold pasta dishes and cold cut platters.

This time around, shifter is mixing up four signature cocktails all priced at RMB 49 each and available for imbibing on location or take away. One standout is the “serenity”, made with gin, birch juice, jasmine tea, and elderflower liqueur. Also available is shifter’s own longan and Reisling sweet wine – “as sweet as you are” –  from Huailai Vineyard available for RMB 199/bottle or RMB 149 to go.
