Campaign Aims to Offset Medical Bills for Canadian Attacked Outside Gulou Bar on New Year's Eve

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to offset the medical bills of Canadian expat Matthew Cormier, who suffered a ruptured spleen, internal bleeding and a broken rib after being attacked outside a Gulou bar on New Year's Eve.

A description on the crowdfunding site, penned by the fund's organizer and friend Brad Locke, says Cormier was, "celebrating the New Year with a few friends in a bar near the Gulou area, a quiet area of Beijing with many narrow alleyways, and was apparently attacked when he left the bar to go home."

It goes on to say that Cormier believes he was drugged before leaving the bar, and cannot recall what happened.

The victim's employer, a tutoring center, only offers partial health insurance, Locke notes.

The initial operation to stop internal bleeding and remove Cormier's ruptured spleen at Chaoyang Hospital was successful. The course of medical treatment is estimated to exceed RMB 50,000.

In a Facebook instant message exchange, Locke told TBJ that although Cormier cannot remember what happened, he believes he was attacked because "there was no damage to his hands or signs of a struggle," and that he was likely "kicked very hard in the ribs, hard enough to rupture his spleen."

Cormier said his wallet and two cell phones were taken in the attack as well.

Locke added in an earlier social media post that Cormier has not yet been released from the hospital, and that the victim and his loved ones would not like to comment until after he has had a chance to recover.

In the meantime, concerned readers can donate to Cormier's crowdfund here. Its goal is set at RMB 57,150 and to date 186 supporters have pledged RMB 44,357. Well-wishers can post in the comments section.

Members of the Gulou community are alarmed by the incident, and have passed on their concern and support to Cormier as he recovers.

Michael Cupoli, a musician known as Noise Arcade and an active member of the hutong area's bar scene, says the attack was "awful." He implores club goers to never accept drinks from strangers or leave their beverages unattended, for fear of them being drugged.

While that suggestion may seem obvious, such common sense can be difficult to maintain in the midst of a tipsy evening out. He adds: "The hutongs are generally safe. Just be aware of what's happening around you like you would in any big city. It's unfortunate what happened."

Indeed, while such incidents are rare in Beijing, they can often blindside residents when they do occur. Cupoli adds: "Beijing is in general a safe city, and people probably do let their guard down a bit."

Uncommon incidents of violence in the Gulou area usually do rally the community in solidarity whenever they occur. The latest such case took place in early December when reports of a sanlunche driver preying on female passengers was heavily circulated on WeChat, with venue owners posting a photo of the driver and warning their customers to avoid such unsafe means of transportation.

An earlier TBJ article outlined other safety issues brought on by wayward cabbies, while also suggesting that concerned citizens take a self defence course from organizers like KMG China. Another post suggests that victims call 110 emergency line whenever they fall into trouble, while adding that residents should avoid large crowds. More to come as this story develops.

I just came across a nice movie called, Spleen (2014). Mr. Cormier might get a kick...( sorry, no pun intended) out of this movie....ha ha ha ha ha !!! Maybe when he gets back to Canada he can watch it with all his other drunken buddies while he is recovering from all his future bouts of pnemonia.

Happy to report that the campaign has already exceeded its goal and has had an additional 80 supporters jump in since this article was posted yesterday.

From the site, dated today (Jan 6):

"Thank you for all your donations! We've definitely received enough at this point to cover the costs of the operation, and pay for his expenses for the month he won't be able to work. The doctor mentioned that he won't be able to fly for a certain period of time, and that he will need to take blood thinners every day for at least 3 months to prevent possible blood clots. Hopefully he will be able to fly home as soon as possible.

I will be going to visit Matt this evening after work and will tell him the good news. He's still not out of ICU at this point, but they projected it would be today (January 6th).

All of Matt's friends here have been overwhelmed at how much support this received, and Matt and his family are extremely grateful for everyone's contributions.

The Chinese authorities have also been very helpful in investigating the matter, and are taking it very seriously. CCTV's surrounding the area are in the process of being checked, and so far they haven't been able to find anything. The two detectives I spoke to have been very supportive, and have been in contact with the friends Matt was with that night. We are still in contact with them, and will keep you updated if there are any developments. "

I have no reason to distrust that what happened is not true.

However, there is one thing I find weird: though the report mentions specificially "there was no damage to his hands," the picture above shows his right hand clearly bandaged from what looks like an injury sustained by punching something.

Another long and insensitive tirade written by someone with polarizing views. The anonmity of the internet really is a showcase for the weak to come out and express their opinions in the most vile way possible.

Dear mysterious commentenator on the unfortuate circumstances of strangers, I hope you are never left in a hopeless and freak accident in a foreign country. I hope you never have to reach out to friends in our small expat community for help. Someone with such hatred running deep through himself would not have such strong support from friends and family.

On the topic of drinking on New Year's Eve, I would have to say that is a common and ageless tradition around the world. You can feel free to make assumuptions and turn this story into whatever narrative you like. But it's really tough for you to claim moral highground when you prey upon a traumatic and violent crime that happened to a stranger. Have some self-respect!

Certainly it is positive to help people in need.

However I assume that there are many people much much poorer than he who are not able to pay there medical bill.

Sounds very much that a foreign-operated webpage specially supports a foreigner.

Plus a lot of non-substantiated rumors ...

Ribs and spleen are at quite different parts of the body ...

When he was drugged and unconscious (can't remember anything), why should someone kick him so hard (unless it was a personal enemy)?

Another drunken foreigner blaming everyone else but himself. Yeah...sure ...I bet someone drugged his drink. That is a good one! Of course he cannot remember anything...how convienent. Of course there are no damage to his hands or signs of a struggle, because this moron was probably covered with his own piss, and certainly lying passed out in the gutter. Where were all those friends he was supposed to be with while all this was taking place? Stupid drunken moron. That is what he gets for stumbling around on the street drunk and then passing out in a gutter in the middle of the night. He deserves every injury he has and it is reall a pity that he is not having to suck his food through a straw right now. Is 50,000 Yuan the going rate for patching up moronic foreigners now? If I am not mistaken, I seem to remember another drunken foreigner that stumbled off the Great Wall in a drunken stupor needing 50, 000 yuan or there abouts to get patched back up. I really get a laugh out of these idiots that paint themselves as angelic victims of circumstances that they had no way of preventing...then having the gall to ask for someone else to pay for their stupidity. How pathetic! Happy New Year you drunken moron!
