Blood Donations Urgently Required by Beijing United Family Hospital
Beijing United Family Hospital currently has two patients in the ICU who are in critical need of two types of Rh negative blood (Rh negative A and Rh negative O). These types of blood are rare in China. While the hospital carries a supply of Rh negative blood, these patients will require more. The Tongzhou Blood Center (通州血站互献血点), which is in partnership with BJU for all its hospital blood drives, is working with Beijing United Family Hospital for donation.
If you have this type of blood and wish to donate, or know someone who is able to make a donation, please go to the Tongzhou Blood Center collection site at the South Gate of Chaoyang Park. They provide English service. The Tongzhou Blood Center will give Beijing United Family Hospital blood based on their needs.
At this time, donors cannot donate blood directly at BJU.
To see if you fit the donor criteria in China, or more information, please contact Patient Services at (010) 5927 7350 or email patientservices@ufh.com.cn.

Re: Blood Donations Urgently Required by Beijing United...
btw an update on this situation, from UFH
Dear Beijing community,
Thank you from Beijing United Family Hospital for all your outpouring of support for the two emergency patients in urgent need of Rh negative blood. The hospital has received multiple donations from donors in our community through our partners at the Tongzhou Blood Center.
Beijing United Family Hospital has its own on-site Blood Bank (supplied by the Tongzhou Blood Center) where it stores all types of blood, including Rh negative blood, and is adequate for all normal hospital needs, including emergencies. This was a special circumstance where the community has played a wonderful role in donating Rh negative A and Rh negative O blood.
Like other hospitals in Beijing, we can only accept donations made through the Tongzhou Blood Center.
At present, BJU now has enough Rh negative blood to meet the needs of these two patients. If further need arises, we will contact the donors on our updated Rh negative donor list.
Thank you again for your support.

Re: Blood Donations Urgently Required by Beijing United...
I've just confirmed with Beijing United that blood is not bought and sold on the open market, hence the shortage (and the idiocy of many of the "hey why don't those rich bastards just go out and buy some" remarks above). Here's what they said:
"All blood used by hospitals in BJ must be first acquired by, and processed through, the BJ blood center. Nobody can 'purchase' blood except them. They are only legal distributor."
Thanks for following up on this, admin.
Nice how wild speculation dries up when facts are verified.

Re: Blood Donations Urgently Required by Beijing United...
But my question is, why BUF no open a centre in their clinic if they need the blood ? And in special if is so emergency case as this one ? It sound lieke a business this. First donate to Tongzhou centre, then they sell it to UFH ( really ? or they need it there too ?) .
Hi July,
If you investigate China's regulations on foreign businesses (hospitals) operating in China, you'll find that there are a TON of rules/guidelines controlling what the foreign companies may or may not do. Very few of the laws are logical, but if a foreign company wants to operate legally here, it has to do whatever the (unreasonable) local laws/regulations say.
I think that if you research China's laws about blood and drugs, you'll find that BJ United probably isn't allowed to open its own blood donation center. BJ United Hospital operates VERY efficiently, so if it's not opening its own blood donation center, you can be pretty sure that it's because of China's laws controlling blood distribution.

Haha wtf, this is ridiculous, rhesus negative is not dangerous, it's just anither type of blood, and actually, all rh - blood (A, AB, B and O) combined in China total only 0.5% of the population, it's really low.

Re: Blood Donations Urgently Required by Beijing United...
I agree with you ! China only think money and business and use foreigners really for anything they think we are so stupid to do for them.... Why the hospital don't say " come right here, right now and donate your blood for this 2 peoples " , why is need to go to other hospital to donate it then they sell it further ? Is a bullshit ... Oh, where to add, you need pay the visit to doctor, the tools they need to collect your blood, etc.. this is China ! And yes, right, the subway is terrible expensive now. More expensive than in Shenzhen . And anyway, I don;t think so Chinese peoples no have RH negative blood, they only don't want to recognize this and most o them , who has RH negative, in special the women, will refuse even to take the medical test for getting married ! Because RH negative is dangerous to have a child and it will then be transmited further generation. In all the world exist RH negative and RH positive, so is not true Chinese no have RH negative , but better say, chinese peoples don;t care to donate blood for others ! In special if the patient is foreigner ! This is the truth ...

RH negtive is very dangerous for your health in may aspects... I have positive RH, so , I am sorry, cannot donate anyway.
But my question is, why BUF no open a centre in their clinic if they need the blood ? And in special if is so emergency case as this one ? It sound lieke a business this. First donate to Tongzhou centre, then they sell it to UFH ( really ? or they need it there too ?) .
I would be pleased to donate if I will have RH negative and the right gropu of blood they need, but to be sure that the blood arrive to this patients, not only in a business way...

Re: Blood Donations Urgently Required by Beijing United...
Hi squid,
It's nothing to do with money; access to blood and drugs are controlled by China's medical regulations. If a particular type of blood isn't available at the Chinese blood bank they are legally partnered with, I imagine that BJ United can't get it anywhere else without going through ridiculous amounts of red tape to get the blood from another source. The expense isn't the problem; it's the TIME it would take to go about this the legal way. Bureaucracy, espcially here, has little concern about the immediate needs of one person.

Re: Blood Donations Urgently Required by Beijing United...
You guys are scum. Two patients need help and you say "I would donate if this was being done at a public hospital," or you blame the hospital for charging too much? Guest, if you actually have Rh negative blood and you don't donate, that's unconscionable. Squid, did you realy have to comment on this post? Run out of vile things to say about me already? Godfather, same thing -- if you have RH negative O blood and you're not donating because you feel you should be paid for it, that is indefensible.
Appeals like these have been successful in the past thanks to the generosity and kindness of people in the community. Readers, please donate if possible.

Re: Blood Donations Urgently Required by Beijing United...
As you rightly said “looking at how rare” such blood groups are in China, and how expensive house rent is in Beijing and the recent increment in the subway prices… I feel you guys should pay a couple of thousands to get the blood. Or you want it free from foreigners then sell it to the needy. I have the negative O anyway. I might need to see the patient before selling -- oh sorry donating

Re: Blood Donations Urgently Required by Beijing United...
I don't think it's stinginess, I think it's that RH negative blood is not common amongst Chinese people.
Maybe there are regulations against buying and selling blood, particularly over international borders

Re: Blood Donations Urgently Required by Beijing United...
I suspect United could afford to pay for the blood, considering their rates.
Why the stingyness?
