Capital Bites: Pop-Up Cafe, New Bakery, Burritos and Tacos

Beijing Design Week is kicking off. Modo Catering provided the food at the Australian Embassy yesterday evening for artist Matthew Joscelyne's art installation Beijing Green. It was fare you'll find at both Moka Bros (lemon bars, meringues) and Modo Urban Deli (black olive tapenade, quiche), and it all disappeared quickly.

Also as part of BJDW, Traitor Zhou's will be doing a pop-up cafe (noon-7pm) through September 27 in the RAWR Space (Red Brick Art Space) in Caochangdi. They'll also be hosting a "Taste of Guizhou" party (3pm) on September 26 and a Bodega Block Party (5pm) on September 27. The cafe/bodega space will offer coffee by Ocean Grounds, craft beer and bourbons from Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co. and cheese from Le Fromager de Pekin.

The onset of autumn is here with chilly winds blowing through the city. Mas has stopped their Sunday summer barbecues and started up a new Sunday series they're calling Trash Cinema (10pm). This weekend they'll be screening Mystics in Bali which they've described as an Indonesian ghost story with an incomprehensible plot, hilarious dubbing and bizarre, cheap gross-out special effects.

The Fort has a set dinner menu with hand-made fusion roubing for RMB 100 per person. It's reservation only (and tucked away so you'll need directions) so call (132 6017 7114) a day in advance for details and to book.

Formerly delivery-only Sweet Tooth was closed for the month of August in preparation for opening a storefront. They've unveiled the new location and you'll find them on Xinzhong Jie west of Great Leap Brewpub, down the small alley behind the Golden Pineapple Youth Hostel and a Japanese kato-ya place. They're in soft opening for the moment, but find them there for a coffee, a baked good or a Tavalin bagel from around 11am to 7pm, Tuesday through Sunday. More on them very soon.

Wedged between the recently opened O' Steak and La Tavernita on Xingfucun Zhonglu is the even fresher faced El Gran Bocado Taqueria ("The Big Bite"). It's owned by the same crew behind Sand Pebbles on Wudaoying. Burritos hover around RMB 60 and tacos are in the RMB 40 price range and Slow Boat brews are on tap. We'll be over to stuff our faces with salsa shortly and will let you know how that goes. If you're curious before we make it, get over there anytime daily between noon-midnight.

The holiday is coming up and if you can't get out of the city to the ocean itself, Agua has a lobster rice promotion through Oct 7. Their suckling pig promotion last month was quite the deal and this is looking to be great, too. RMB 498 (knocked down from an original RMB 698) will snag you and a few friends 850g of lobster. More holiday dining news in the works, but this should get you started.
