News You Might Have Missed: A New Apple and Animal Cruelty
Mac fans have an exciting weekend to look forward to as the third Apple retail store in Beijing prepares to open. As taxis continue to be scarce when we want them the most, we're constantly on the lookout for alternatives – and a new app may be a promising answer. Unfortunately it's not all good news and several recent reports show that animal cruelty continues to be a regular occurrence in the city.
This Saturday, Apple opens their third retail store in Beijing on the bustling shopping thoroughfare of Wangfujing. Doors will open at 9am. If rumors are true, this will be the largest Apple store in Asia, and the dedicated masses who are willing to line up may get free T-shirts. There’s been no more word on the launch of the iPhone 5, but if suggested timetables are to believed, we may not have to wait much longer. In the past, the opening of new retail locations have often coincided with the arrival of new products, so this may be a sign that the latest iPhone version isn’t far behind.
Could Dudujiaoche.com be the solution to the city's nightmare taxi-situation? Dudu Jiaoche is a car-rental app which allows users to book rides, though it's unclear how far in advance bookings need to be made. It costs roughly RMB 10-20 more than the fare on regular cabs, but removes the hassle of trying to wave down resistant drivers.
Danwei.com has translated a story of animal cruelty that appeared in the Beijing Morning Post; it offers a sad glimpse into the reality of dogs that are sold on the streets and in the markets of Beijing.
“Conditions at these breeding spots, as the Beijing Morning Post found out, are downright horrible. The dogs are kept in very unhygienic and very crowded conditions, and as one of the dog breeders (a Mr Wang) told the newspaper, its simply impossible that there are not a lot of infected dogs there … And as obviously no-one would buy a dog that looks sick either, the dogs would be injected with a very potent monoclonal antibody therapy injection that would make them leap and frisk about (活蹦乱跳) for a whole week. After this time, they would invariably succumb to the infections.”
In more disheartening dog cruelty news, Beijing Cream posted about dogfighting that occurred in Daxing District on October 10.
Finally, for a bit of levity, China hes been embracing the Gangnam-style phenomenon (despite being a bit late to the game) and the most recent version comes courtesy of the Hyatt Regency Jinan. Still want more? Come by our anniversary party tonight to get a sneak peak of how the Beijinger does it.
