Celebrate Homely Veg at Traitor Zhou’s First Annual Ugly Tomato Festival
Google "ugly vegetables" and it quickly becomes apparent that we have a trend on our hands. So-called ugly vegetables, the unsightly, odd-shaped, bruised bits of veg that don't make it onto the shelves of the major retailers, where style is favored over substance, are coming back into vogue as people realize that using them helps to cut food waste and supports seasonal eating. Supermarkets across Europe are reintroducing these imperfect yet tasty veg, and now champions of quality produce Traitor Zhou's want to do the same in Beijing.
They are teaming up with Little Willow Farm and more than 10 restaurants around town to celebrate the best of seasonal produce: tomatoes. During August and September, the participating restaurants will prepare some of their signature dishes, as well as new ones, using ugly tomatoes of all shapes, sizes, and colors.
