Dec 10 Book Talk: Ancient Chinese Wisdom Has Gone to the Dogs

Perhaps you’ve heard or read some ancient Chinese philosophy and enjoyed it but wouldn’t it be a lot more interesting in, say, dog form?

Author-illustrator Cherry Denman thought just that and in her new book Way of Dog: A Canine Guide to Ancient Chinese Wisdom combines the two and creates a book that captures what dogs are most prized for – simplifying the meaning and guidelines of life. Featuring simple quotes of Chinese philosophy, presented bilingually so nothing gets lost in translation, alongside charmingly hand-drawn pen-and-ink doggie designs, it’s a learning style one could easily get used to.

Described by one reviewer as a “delight from head to tail,” the wisdom of Confucius and Sun Tzu within packs enough bite to help you navigate the dog-eat-dog world. Hey, if a dog can do it, so can we. And there’s no better partner than man’s best friend to walk you towards doggy enlightenment.

Cherry will be stopping by The Bookworm on Wednesday (Dec 10) to celebrate the launch of her book and will be on hand to discuss how the idea came about.

There will also be a pop-up shop selling original illustrations from the book opening at 6pm, with the RMB 100 price tag going towards the Little Adoption Shop.

So from 7.30pm, have your tails wagging for glasses of mulled wine and treats of the human food kind and don’t forget to pick up a copy of Way of Dog for the animal lover in you.
