Bad Eggs, Good Eggs
Bad eggs can’t be good, but good eggs can easily become bad. For example, you could eat too many of them and develop serious heart problems. Or, you could soak them in urine. Read on for the eggscruciating details.
A 26-year-old man from Zhengzhou was recently diagnosed with coronary heart disease due to overconsumption of eggs. For over five years, as part of his martial arts training, he consumed 10 eggs per day. (That adds up to more than 18,260 eggs!) Just in case you needed a reminder, nutrtionists recommend that adults consume a maximum of two eggs daily, and it’s best if they’re boiled. (By the way, if you can shell those puppies super fast, you might be breaking a world record at breakfast.)
On the other hand, some eggs may sound terribly bad but taste extremely good. As we mentioned last year around this time, the town of Dongyang in Zhejiang province traditionally marks the advent of spring with an unusual ritual: harvesting the urine of young schoolboys from primary school toilets to be used as a marinade and cooking liquid for eggs. The "virgin boy eggs" are celebrated for their alleged health benefits and "fresh and salty taste." Here's that post again, complete with instructions for how you can make them yourself at home. And here's some photos of the entire process, along with a note about their popularity in Dongyang: "The local resident of the city like this unusual dish, they can eat more than 10 eggs for a day." Oh dear, we know where that leads ...
Does all this egg talk put you in the mood for breakfast or a fancy Easter brunch? Here’s a list of places offering great options. Don’t forget to order some good old-fashioned eggs! (But maybe stop at two?) Bon appétit!
