Established by Li Liang in 1999 as one of the first galleries in Shanghai, Eastlink Gallery quickly established a reputation as one of the most critically acclaimed galleries in China. Since its inception, Eastlink has supported emerging and experimental artists, with a proven track record in showing artists who have gone on to become leading figures in the contemporary Chinese art market. The pivotal exhibition “Fuck Off” was held at here in 2000 which solidified Eastlink’s reputation as an anchor tenant where artists-particularly emerging artists and those underrepresented in conventional forums-can exhibit their work and exchange ideas with their peers. Oscillating between museum and commercial gallery, Eastlink has continued to seek out and champion the work of China’s most innovative and experimental artists, and create a new platform for promoting contemporary Chinese art.
As the pioneer art gallery at Moganshan Lu, now Shanghai’s artistic center, Eastlink commands an impressive space of 900 square meters in a converted warehouse. The white minimalist exhibition space allows for the showing of a coherent body of work, either solo or group, whilst working as a flexible and exciting venue for large-scale installations and performances. The gallery has hosted work in a wide range of media – painting, sculpture, video, installation and performance art- embracing work by artists of different disciplines and media.
Eastlink offers year round exhibitions that reflect its commitment to supporting both emerging and established artists. It functions as an arena for new trends in contemporary art Chinese art to evolve and disseminate. At the same time, the gallery also showcases international artists in order to promote and facilitate a dialogue between Chinese artists and artists from around the world.
