Satisfyingly Simple: Sanlitun Soho's Man Sushi Does Exactly What the Name Suggests

As you peer over the railing from the ground level of the Sanlitun Soho down into the basin of cafés and shops, not all of the storefronts are as relentlessly straightforward about their business as Mǎn Sushi. As the sign proclaims, plain and simple, they sell sushi of the satisfying (满 mǎn) variety, man.

The chain had previously been confined to a few hidden or distant locations in Beijing, but it has now landed in the heart of the downtown. As such, while it is far from being the neighborhood’s premier sushi restaurant, it is now perhaps one of the most prominent.

That said, the quality is about what one would expect from a place that is virtually unbranded sushi restaurant – fair and satisfying, but nothing to write home about. What it lacks in remarkability, however, it makes up for with a wide selection at rather affordable prices. The menu is about 46 pages long and contains just about every kind of edible sea creature, plus meatier yakitori, beef tongue, and a selection off the grill, including Wagyu steak (RMB 388) and lamb cutlets (RMB 68).

The majority of the menu is still dedicated to sushi, of course, and there are a couple of notable rolls such as the cheese-covered seafood rolls (RMB 58 for seven pieces) and the particularly satisfying tempura rolls with imitation crab meat at a ridiculously low RMB 28.

For a really unique experience, you would be better off going for dinner at Baowu or lunching on sea urchin on rice at Tsukiji Uni Donburi – but with the majority of the rolls sitting below RMB 50, and most other menu items priced equally reasonably, Man Sushi is a solid lunchtime or casual dinner option.
