Topwin's Aptly Titled New Steak House Is a Cut Above
Any protein fiends that stop by Steak House to get their fix will be heartily satisfied. The recently opened, and aptly (albeit unoriginally) named restaurant is situated on the third floor of the Topwin mall. It's a spacious, softly lit venue with 300 seats yet minimal noise, making it ideal for a date night or a semi-formal business lunch.
Two weeks remain in this new restaurant's soft opening, meaning patrons can take advantage of discounts on many of the set menu items such as the "Classic," whose normal RMB 315 price is only RMB 239 for this promotion, and the more elaborate "Exquisite" set, which is on for RMB 338 compared to its regular RMB 496.
We found the classic set to be quite worth the price. It began with the signature beef salad, which featured Japanese style diced half-boiled eggs, slices of tart and juicy beef that had a fiery spicy after taste expertly balanced with the citrus orange chunks. In short it was a simple yet dynamic starter.
But of course the truly memorable portion of the meal was the servings of red meat. The exquisite set menu's tempting main course was the beef Wellington. This British classic was satisfying, thanks to its crisp pastry layer that was thankfully not too greasy, and the hearty and tender beef. However, there was one flaw and that was that the beef was a tad too dry, leaving our palates somewhat underwhelmed.
The classic set's apple wood-grilled top sirloin with black pepper didn't have any such issue. On the contrary: it boasted tastebud-dousing juiciness that were robust and fulfilling.
Each set comes with a few dessert options; we opted for both the tiramisu and the red velvet cake. The former was unfortunately a true misfire, featuring only a dusting of tiramisu-style chocolate arranged fetchingly enough in the outline of utensils on a saucer. Otherwise, it was nothing like tiramisu, instead featuring yogurt and berries in a glass in what amounted to a glorified fruit cup. This would have be perfectly fine had it been titled more accurately, seeing as it was a light and tasty dessert, but the staff should adjust the menu accordingly pronto. The red velvet cake was thankfully much better, due to its cushy texture and tart flavor.
In other words: the low points of our Steak House experience were frustrating but not disqualifying, while the highs give it the potential of becoming a prime red meat destination.
