Beijing International Design Triennial
Wednesday, September 28 Beijing's first ever design triennial opened with an exhibit called "Ren: Good Design" at the cavernous National Museum of China. The exhibit includes five sub-exhibits hosted by Switzerland, the UK, France, Italy and Hong Kong. We had a guided tour of the Swiss exhibit (easily the most conceptually coherent and whimsically fun of the bunch), but also snapped some shots at the others. Barbara Holzer and Tristan Kobler (you'll recognize them in the pictures as the pixie-like blond woman and the professor-looking bespectacled man, respectively) designed Switzerland's exhibit around the idea that people-focused, forward-thinking designers are "The Good Guys" in our battle against ugliness, sameness and environmental disaster. The Hong Kong exhibit centered on the use of bamboo and was quite well received by visitors as well.
