China’s Psychedelic Pioneers! Formed around the year 2000, WHAI took over a decade of creative refinement before officially announcing its establishment on October 24, 2012. Through long-term evolution and introspection, WHAI gradually became a pioneering rock band. Their philosophical lyrics, exploration and experimentation with sound, and powerful live performances have made them a favorite at major music festivals both in China and abroad, as well as among industry insiders.
"WHAI," meaning "Why" and "How," was named by Zhang Wei, drawing from Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist philosophy—self-reflection, self-awareness, and self-recognition. He created China’s first truly psychedelic electronic band—WHAI. Their unique live performances deeply resonate with audiences, expressing the minimalist and psychedelic sounds of China under the cosmic principle of "formation, existence, decay, and emptiness."
