The story is set in the Austrian thermal spa resort Bad Ischl. The previous winter, Eisenstein abandoned drunken Falke dressed as a bat in the center of town, exposing him to ridicule the next day. Therefore, Falke, in collusion with Eisenstein's wife Rosalinde, is orchestrating a ball as a way of getting revenge on Eisenstein. Before Eisenstein is to be put in prison for insulting an official, Falke invites him to a ball in the name of Prince Orlofsky. At the ball, Eisenstein is introduced to his maid Adele, guised as a pop star, and his wife who pretends to be a Hungarian countess. Kept in the dark, Eisenstein lavishly flirts with his wife. The next morning they all find themselves at the prison offices, where Rosalinde accuses his husband of his impropriety.
