Trade Wars Are Class Wars (2020) provides a comprehensive and detailed overview on the development of the economic ills that define modern international political economy. By tracing the origins of today’s trade wars to decisions made by politicians and business leaders in China, Europe, and the United States in the past three decades, the authors present a cohesive narrative that shows how the class wars of rising inequality are a threat to the global economy and international peace—and what we can do about it.

Mr Michael Pettis is a nonresident senior fellow in the Carnegie Asia Program based in Beijing, professor of finance at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management, where he specializes in Chinese financial markets. He is also the author of several books, including The Great Rebalancing: Trade, Conflict, and the Perilous Road Ahead for the World Economy (Princeton University Press, 2013).
