北京 Wave is proud to announce the launch of its inaugural event ‘‘This Is Not Consent’’ to mark Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.
In November 2018, news that a rape victim's underwear was heartlessly held up as evidence in an Irish court shook the world, dominated headlines and prompted much-needed discussions about the issue of consent and how authorities handle sexual assault in today’s society. In the wake of the case, public outrage caused the hashtag #ThisIsNotConsent to explode across social media and rallied activists to take to the streets in protest to dispel the rape myths that are still accepted nationally, and globally, today.
This event will bring to the forefront discussions on similar high-profile criminal cases from around the world, personal stories from community members and issues surrounding sexual violence and consent, in an aim to break the stigma, support survivors and raise awareness. Money made from event and raffle ticket sales will be donated to the Beijing Gender Health Education Institute (BGHEI), an NGO that focuses on LGBT issues, gender, sexuality and sexual health.
