The broken-down, sparse South African house music genre has been making avid fans but remains relatively obscure. Gqom is DIY, a low-budget street sound atodds with the smooth, clean production of the populist kwaito house -- it's very tribal and the kick drum has an unfamiliar pattern. It's easy to identify the Gqom sound because it is unique.
