This winter Live Beijing Music has invited two bands - from Xi’an and Wuhan - to make the pilgrimage over to Beijing and light up the scene for one night only. The young Xi’an singer-songwriter WestByWest (named after the famed Hitchcock joint North By Northwest) blew up this year with her sensual trip-hop debut. Utilizing an array of modular synthesizers and vocal sampling in the arrangements, while the aesthetics of WestByWest’s music is digital in a large sense, the emotion is purely organic, evoking a rigid cold serving of haunting beauty and resonating lyricism that lingers long after. Out of Wuhan comes electro rockers Cod New, who have over the last few years become one of the city’s busiest acts – playing everything from festivals to opening for heavyweight groups like Ratatat – their sound finds the ‘balance between electronic samples, musical instruments and all its possibilities only to then restructure that sound into the real world’. Local support comes in the form of Nocturnes, one of the city’s hardest working groups - the indielectronic duo has been on a tear since their dropped their LP last year - full slick downbeat grooves that ripple outwards, ghostly vocals weighed down in emotion, and a keen sense of the bittersweet beauty found in anguish and sorrow.
