Goethe-Institut 798

The Goethe-Institut is celebrating its 30th anniversary in China. On November 17, the institute will open for a 30-hour, non-stop multifaceted event at its space in art disctrict in "798" to celebrate this anniversary, open and free for everyone to join. One third of these 30 hours is dedicated to a night of music, inviting the audience to soak in a diverse range of audio-visual performances by artists from various cities in China and Germany. This night offers the unique opportunity to spend 10 hours immersed in music. It is a celebration of culture, true to a distinct and manifold character, and represents the openness and broadness of cultural activities that have made the Goethe-Institut China a cultural landmark for 30 years.

The musical program runs under the title, "Antipodes". The word "antipode" derives from ancient Greek ἀντίποδες (antípodes), from ἀντί (antí, “opposite”) + πόδες (pódes), plural of πούς (poús, “foot”). The lineup of artists, first and foremost, represents their independent artistic practices and positions; artists walking on their own feet, often in direct opposition to artistic cliché and genre classification. This continuously independent artistic stride, being an antipode to cultural role models of any kind, requires persistence and clarity of vision, an approach through which each of these artists pursues a varied practice across media and genres that is both timeless and fearlessly defining the sounds and shapes to come.

The Antipodes program installs a con-temporary musical space to be entered and left at any time during the 10-hour program — a space to experience, to contemplate, to meet, to dance, and to listen to a prelude to future soundscapes.
