Atmosphere at China World Summit Wing, Beijing continues to bring renowned world-class bartenders and their exceptional drinks to cocktail lovers in the city this year, as Mauro Mahjoub visits the bar for five nights of cocktail magic from 26 to 30 September 2017.
Mauro is gifted in language, and speaks five of them: Italian, English, French, German and Arabic. He began his career as a bartender at several bars and hotel bars along the Adriatic coast in 1988, before moving to Bologna. Even then, he had begun attending several seminars in Italy and abroad. Since 1994, he has lived in Munich, Bavaria. After working four years as head bartender at several bars in the Bavarian capital in 1998, he decided to open his own bar called Negroni. That same year, he founded the Category Negroni.
He has won numerous national and international competitions. In 2002, he was awarded “Bartender of the Year” in Bavaria. That same year, he obtained a diploma from a hotel school in Munich and became a barmeister.
For Mauro, the bar is not just a job, but rather a passion that led him to become a historian of the bar.In 2008, he became a brand ambassador for Campari and founded the Academy of Munich, where he gives seminars and leads many tastings. He founded the first Museum of Cocktail in Europe, and founded and co-ordinated the Campari “Liquid Art” Contest in Germany. In 2009, he established Mauro’s Negroni Club, an American bar, which obtained great success from day one.
Mauro is a member of various bartending associations, and has served as examiner and judge at many competitions around the world. He holds seminars for the International Bartenders Association (IBA)and Associazione Italiana Barman e Sostenitori (AIBES), where he has been an honorary member since 2010. He is the owner of one of the largest collections of bar books and tools, which were exhibited in the museum town of Cognac in France in 2009 and displayed every year at the Trophees du Bar (Paris, Berlin and Munich).
Maurois known as the “King of Negroni”. The first definition of the word “cocktail” in 1806 described it as a mix of spirit, water, bitters and sugar. The Negroni is faithful to this definition, and it is necessary that it is stirred for a little dilution, which helps make it a smoother drink. The Negroni is one of the very few cocktails created in Italy, and is a symbol of the Italian way of drinking. Working abroad, it is Mauro’s pleasure to share something that reminds him of his roots. The Negroni offers unfinished variations – there is only one rule: the Campari is necessary, because it is a historical truth. That’s how the Negroni was born.
Cocktail lovers will be in for a treat as Mauro presents five handcrafted drinks: Negroni Juleps, Negroni Western, El Jimador Loco, Black Forest and Dune.
