Putting up festive couplets, firing crackers, making dumplings, family reunion at the eve of a new lunar year…these traditions make up the Chinese New Year, which has lasted over 4000 years in China and remains the most important festival of the nation today. It concentrates the emotional, traditional, aesthetic and cultural origins of the Chinese.
In 2001, the Ministry of Culture officially launched the event to build “the Chinese New Year Brand” worldwide, wishing to promote Chinese culture with “the Chinese New Year” as a medium and bridge. In 2009, Vice-premier Liu Yandong (State Councilor at the time) unified the naming of all cultural events launched overseas as “Happy Chinese New Year”, the theme of which is “happiness, harmony, communication and sharing”. The “Happy Chinese New Year” of 2016 gave over 2100 cultural events, in forms of themed temple fairs, international Spring Festival Gala, Lantern Festival parades, cultural exhibitions, firework shows etc., in over 400 cities located in 140 countries and regions, covering over 250 million people/times.
The “Happy Chinese New Year” not only promotes Chinese culture globally, but also leads Chinese brands to the world, making “excellent Chinese products”, spreading “Chinese spirit” and telling “Chinese stories”.
This exhibition of more than 100 photographs, selected from over 300 photographs in albums of the same topic, were taken at scenes where Chinese New Year were celebrated worldwide, and will present the highlights of the 2016 “Happy Chinese New Year”.
