Course Breakdown

Class will be held on Sunday afternoon for 10 weeks, from 2pm – 4pm.

The course is split into two parts.

Part 1: Seal Script (Classes 1 – 5)

Seal script is the oldest script in the history Chinese calligraphy, and it has been in use for at least 3600 years. Seal script was and is mostly used for creating inscriptions and seals, be it for official or private purposes, and sometimes for carving for into bronze ware and weapons. The writing of a seal script is quite complicated, which is why over time the script was gradually replaced by other types of scripts. Nonetheless, even though the seal script lost its practical function, its aesthetic function has been preserved. It has become a script of pure aesthetics for the modern day.

第一主题:篆书基础(一~五课时)

篆书作为中国最古老的系统系文字,用笔相对单一、厚重,讲究中锋,是书法学习入门时期的必修功课。

*Along with a general understanding of calligraphy’s history and technique, you will leave each class having created your own piece of seal script.*

Part 2: Clerical Script (Classes 6 – 10)

Legend says that for speeding up writing, Cheng Miao of the Qin dynasty turned the circular and balanced form of strokes of seal script into one of regulated and angular strokes, thus explaining the birth of the clerical script. The emergence of the clerical script ended the era of ancient writing while opening a new generation for calligraphic art which looked for beautification. And the highly rectilinear structure of the characters is generally a feature also shared with modern Chinese characters.

第二主题:隶书基础(六~十课时)

隶书是古汉字与今汉字的转折,自此以后,中国的文字就确立了“方块字”的概念,也更易识读书写,用笔较篆书更丰富活泼,表现力强,风格各异。

*Along with a general understanding of calligraphy’s history and technique, you will leave each class having created your own piece of clerical script.*
