Featuring a lounge bar, club room and passageways filled with KTV rooms, Palace is a gaudy, fluorescent fusion of Capital Museum, imperial garden and nightclub. The decor features sensuous Peking opera images, ornamental wood carvings, lao Beijing bird cages and perspex lions. Shots, including the clumsily translated “Fellatio,” are painfully expensive, but cocktails are more agreeably priced. Bartenders toss flaming bottles around with gusto every night, with extended shows on Friday and Saturday evenings from 12.30am. Had the emperors of old been on Chivas Regal, the whole city might have been like this. With its club-as-museum style, Palace is fun for a single visit, but the target audience is clearly Beijing's nouveau riche crowd as opposed to expats.
