Inside Jietai Temple, the hundreds of niches once filled by miniature Buddhas are empty. Over 1,300 years old, the temple was never restored after Japanese soldiers destroyed it seventy years ago, though carved marble embel_lishments hint at the temple's former splendor. Initiation rituals for novice monks joining Jietaisi included fasting and burning marks onto their freshly tonsured heads. The temple dates back to before the Tang dynasty, though the current building was part of a Qing era refurbishment. Several old pines on the premises date back over 800 years to the Liao and Jin dynasties.
