Nanxincang was one of the royal granaries during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was originally built in 1409 during the 7th year of Emperor Yong Le’s reign on the site of Bei Tai Cang which had earlier been erected during the Yuan Dynasty. During the Republican era in the early 20th century it was used as armory and then became a warehouse after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Today the complex houses a multitude of restaurants (including Da Dong and Lord of Salt), art galleries, a Kunqu opera theater, a pedestrian walkway and more, all within walking distance of the Workers' Stadium and the Dongsishitiao subway station.
