Founded in 1994 by choreographer Wen Hui and filmmaker Wu Wenguang, the Living Dance Studio is China's first independent dance-theater company. Their multimedia shows lean more towards performance art than pure dance, and they address issues in contemporary Chinese society.
In 2005, Wen and Wu opened Workstation Arts Center “to provide space and information resources, free of charge, to performance and video media artists who wish to create new works.” The Center includes studio space as well as a video library. They help organize the performance and video forum for the annual Dashanzi International Art Festival, and each fall they host Crossing, a contemporary performance festival. Workstation invites artists from abroad to give lectures and teach master classes, in addition to hosting weekly workshops by the Living Dance Studio.
