Malaysia’s eclectic gastronomy mirrors its multiculturalism, encompassing, among others, Peranakan (Straits Chinese), Indian and Malay cuisines. Kafe Peranakan, located behind Kuntai Dasha on Chaowai, captures this variety. Its version of roti canai, a pastry-like pancake typically eaten with curry gravy, is offered alongside an array of roti re-inventions such as banana, sausage and mayonnaise wraps, while the hot favorite teh tarik (“pulled tea,” in Malay) is prepared to frothy perfection at your table, with the waiter “pulling” the milk tea back and forth between mugs. More substantial items include main dishes such as stir-fried prawns with shrimp paste and nasi lemak, the latter an all-in-a-plate meal of coconut rice, curry and condiments, as well as chicken curry, pakora, randang beef curry, satay, assam fish curry and more. The food is complemented by a contemporary, yet unmistakeably Malaysian, decor.
