Hold 'em Stars

Imagine a sports bar with a poker habit. In place of Joe DiMaggio and Diego Maradona, men in Stetsons stare out from the wall. Slogans all around indoctrinate patrons in the virtues of poker. It’s like 1984, with Big Brother as a card sharp. Hold ‘em Stars is sanitized, but feels refreshingly alive, even if it will only appeal to serious poker players. Games begin upstairs when nine players are registered – the RMB 200 buy-in includes free-flow Tsingtao. Given that you could play poker at home with a few friends and plenty of Tsingtao for much less than RMB 200, it's fair to ask why you would come here to drop so much money on a game, but genuine poker lovers will presumably find something to get excited about. Staff suggest turning up from around 7pm to minimize your wait. There are a few sessions most nights, with players bidding to win credit for the website’s online poker games. Besides Tsingtao, the bar offers Erdinger and a few cocktails, and there’s also pool and darts downstairs. The menu includes Tex-Mex dishes, though the food alone doesn’t justify the visit. A serious poker habit just might.
