About the movie:

Daughter of the Light

13-year-old Metok Karpo lives in a Tibetan boarding school for orphans. Her divorced parents are alive, but have left her to be raised by her maternal grandparents. Her mother remarries but the new husband passes away shortly afterwards. Despite all odds, Metok embarks on a journey to find her father in her native grassland. Discovering his happy life with a new family, she is troubled by complex feelings she can only express through her imaginative drawings. As new waves of dating on smart phones sweeping through the area, traditional life and nomadic family values start to collapse. In Tibet, divorce is becoming a social problem, affecting more and more families. The film documents this adolescent’s quest for father and belonging, spotlighting a young girl living tenaciously in a society of radical transformation.

The director: Khashem Gyal

Khashem Gyal is a filmmaker from the Tibetan Plateau in Qinghai. His first short documentary, VALLEY OF THE HEROES has been screened at many film festivals and universities around the world. Khashem’s first feature, DAUGHTER OF THE LIGHT, has received the ‘Colors of Asia Award’ at the 2017 Tokyo Docs. In 2018, he was nominated for the Adeste Gold Medal, which recognizes global citizens under 40 who have ‘excelled beyond their limits in inspiring others to ‘touch the stars’.’ In 2019, DAUGHTERS’ COURAGE won the ATP Grand Prize for Excellence in Japan.

About the musician: Bone Lhamokyap

Bone Lhamokyap, a professional musician and founder of the band SREINA, creates original music rooted in the traditions of the Shongomah (Sangemao) people, a nearly extinct Tibetan tribe from Zhouni Nalang Valley, Gannan, in Gansu Province. His music reflects a deep admiration for nature, peace, and the beauty of life. Bone blends ethnic sounds with electronic harmonies, playing instruments like the guitar, flute, and keyboard. He is also skilled in Kundalini meditation and chanting as well as crafting some of his tribal music instruments.

Bone has performed at numerous stages across Asia, Europe, and the USA, including the Shanghai World Music Festival. In 2016, he collaborated with Grammy-recognized producer Michael Starita at Fantasy Studios in California, producing singles like “Mother Earth is Crying.”

He has continued to tour internationally, including a notable summer Europe Tour in 2024, which concluded with a performance at Finland's Kosmos Festival. In October 2024 Bone has released his new EP which serves as the soundtrack for the upcoming movie by Laurence J. Brahm under the Shambhala Studio records, the new chapter of the ‘Searching for the Lotus Born Master’ series. Bone also received the ‘Best New Age’ award at Beijing’s Gate of Nine Dragons festival in 2024.

Moving to a new country, going through a breakup, losing a job, or living with mental conditions are very challenging. Yet, there’s no reason to suffer alone when one can choose to join hands with others and let the power of connection and group support encourage and heal us.

In the absence of such social support in Beijing, CandleX established the peer support group in October, 2015, with the goal to provide psychosocial support to Beijing community. It provides a safe and supportive environment for people living in and out of Beijing to share personal thoughts and experiences in small, confidential gatherings.

To understand this project, or if you’d like to read our 1st, 2nd and 3rd year support group review, please visit https://www.candlex.cn/mental-health-support-group.

  • Please note that this is a Peer Support Group, there will be one facilitator throughout the session to monitor the progress of each session and facilitate group interactions, no professional therapists will be attending.

Additionally, we offer facilitator training programs to empower others to establish their own groups. During these training and debrief sessions, we handle information related to group dynamics and facilitation with sensitivity and care. We also compile an annual report on the demographics of our attendees to help the Beijing and broader community better understand our efforts and establish complementary groups, ensuring that all our initiatives are aligned and cohesive.
