Grand View Garden

Modeled on the grounds described in Dream of the Red Chamber, the park (Daguanyuan in Chinese) makes for a very pleasant afternoon stroll. Although the park is not specifically geared towards children, there is a small enclosure where you can feed deer, cockatoos and a multitude of peacocks. Also fun for kids is a ride in the bridal sedan chair next to the Archway (the white marble gate in the north of the park).

RMB 40, half price for students. Animal enclosure: RMB 5.

Yunmen Gorge Scenic Area

Suitable for a half-day visit, Yunmeng Gorge (not to be confused with Yunmengshan) contains towering rock faces, a canyon with a shallow stream, and deep, cold pools where visitors are allowed to swim. The easy hike to the summit takes approximately two hours; hungry travelers can have simple, home-style dishes at the farmer's house there. While there's an admission fee, management is pretty hands-off and camping is allowed in the park.

Camp the Wall

Camp The Wall offers weekend camping trips at an unrestored section of the Great Wall outside Beijing. These budget trips are all included: transportation, tents, food, water, snacks and a guide. Trips depart every other Saturday near Tian'anmen Square with a private bus with a group of max. 22 people. Arrive at a local village to have a bite after hiking up to the Wall and setting up camp. Then explore more of the wall until sunset when you will meet back at camp for a BBQ dinner (vegetarian option available). Hang out around a campfire until you go to sleep in your tent under the stars.
