Beijing is a happening city! Don't miss a thing with our weekend roundup of the latest news.

Beijing Students Win Gold at 2025 FISU World University Games

The 2025 FISU World University Games kicked off on Wed, Jul 16, in Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region, and a Beijing athlete has already made quite a … splash.

He Yanwei, of Beijing Sport University, and Lu Wei, of Chengdu Sport University, won gold in the women’s 10m synchronized platform diving event, China’s first gold medal in this year’s games.

The pair, who began training together not even two weeks ago, secured the top spot with a lead of more than 30 points ahead of the competition’s second place finishers.

The two talented divers received an official letter of congratulations from China’s Ministry of Education.

This year’s Summer Universiade will last until Jul 27.

For those who don't know, the International University Sports Federation (Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire or FISU) was founded in 1949 and oversees the organization of sports competition for student athletes aged 17-25. The FISU puts on two sets of World University Games (Summer and Winter) every two years in a different city around the world. The first World University Games Summer Universiade was held in 1959 in Turin, Italy. This year’s games in Rhine-Ruhr make up the 32nd Summer Universiade. China has hosted the games a number of times, including, notably, in 2001, when Beijing was that year’s host city, and in 2023, when the 2021 Summer Games were held in Chengdu after having been postponed due to Covid.

Up next for the FISU and China is the 2025 FISU University World Cup Football games, which will take place from Sep 17 to Sep 28 in Dalian.

Subway Exit Openings and Closings

  • Olympic Green Station’s Exit F, which directly serves Line 15, has officially opened. The newly opened exit sits at the northwest corner of the intersection of Tianchen Donglu and Datun Lu. The opening of Exit F is expected to significantly reduce congestion and passenger flow during busy times at the station’s Exit H, which was until recently the only station Exit on the west side of Tianchen Donglu.

  • Line 8’s Tianqiao station has seen the opening of a new underground pedestrian channel linking Exit A to Tianqiao Citizens Square. Immediately south of the square is the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center, which already had its own connecting passageway off of the subway station’s Exit D. The opening of the new passenger channel provides more options for heading to locations near the subway station on the west side of Tianqiao Nandajie.

  • The Beijing Metro Network Control Center recently announced that Exit H of the Military Museum transfer station on Line 9 and Line 1’s Batong Line is closed from Jul 14, 2025, until further notice.
