King’s Joy Loses Three Michelin Star Status in 2025 Guide

The sixth edition of the Michelin Guide Beijing, the 2025 edition, has just been released with the ceremony taking place this morning. In this year’s guide 33 Beijing restaurants were awarded stars, although the same number as last year, there have been a few key changes, namely King's Joy only being awarded two stars this year.

Here is the full list of starred restaurants, with new additions in bold:

The biggest shock by far is that critically acclaimed vegetarian restaurant King’s Joy was awarded two stars this year, down from the three stars it had held since the 2021 guide. This is quite the blow, especially since King’s Joy was the world’s first vegetarian three-starred Michelin restaurant. However, King’s Joy did retain the Michelin Green Star, which is given to restaurants with the best environmental and sustainable practices. 

In more positive news, Shandong style restaurant Lu Shang Lu gained a star, being awarded two stars this year, and three new restaurants were awarded one star. Of the restaurants who were awarded one star, classic French cuisine restaurant Blackswan’s achievement is particularly impressive as it only opened up in June this year, obtaining a star in such a short time is no mean feat! It was also great to see The Georg regain its star, which it had previously held for four years (2020-2023) but lost last year due to it being closed for ten months while it relocated.  

Lastly, it was a bit of a surprise to see The House of Dynasties, a Cantonese style restaurant located inside the Rosewood Hotel, awarded a star as in previous years they’ve been a bit off the radar, not appearing on either the Bib Gourmand or Michelin-Selected Restaurant lists in previous years.
