It’s Official: Argentina v Australia is Happening at Gongti, Jun 15
A few weeks ago, word surfaced that FIFA World Cup winners Argentina would possibly be playing against Australia in Beijing sometime in the near future. According to a recently released approval letter and a confirmation from our sources, it’s going to be happening this June at the Workers’ Stadium.
In an official letter of approval from the municipal government (see below in Chinese), event organizer China Hongqiao Investment Co., Ltd. Has been given approval for the Argentine National Men’s Football Team to play the Australian National Men’s Football Team at the Workers’ Stadium.
The match, which the letter calls an “international football invitational tournament match” is set to kick off at 8pm on Thursday, Jun 15.
Despite being a friendly, this is somewhat of a rematch for the two teams, with Argentina having beaten Australia 2-1 in the World Cup’s Round of 16 last year. This meant elimination for Australia and propelled Argentina forward to their eventual Cup win against France.
No other information has been released thus far, and our contact at Gongti told us ticketing will be opened closer to the match date. That being said, Jun 15 is set to be a big day for soccer fans in the capital.
