Walking Tours, Online Tours & Maps Galore: Chinese History Events this Week
History never sleeps in the capital, and while most tour groups are taking a break for the time being, Bespoke Travel Company is bringing back one of their most legendary tours along with an online talk focusing further afield.
Read on to find out more about the events, as well as a special sale by Beijing Postcards this weekend.
Bespoke Travel Co. Offering Online & Offline Exploration
The murder of Pamela Werner, the daughter of a British expatriate living in Beijing, in the late 1930s shocked the world when the news broke. The case has since been immortalized in the book Murder in Peking by Paul French.
While French points the finger at a prominent member of the expat community being behind the murders at the time, the true culprit was never caught, meaning the conclusion is still up for debate.
Thus the topic of the Midnight in Peking walking tour, hosted by Bespoke Travel and Lars Ulrich Thom of Beijing Postcards this Friday, takes guests around the former Legation Quarter and the “Badlands” – once home to brothels, gambling dens and other vices – all while Lars explains his theory on who really killed Pamela.
If you can’t make it out of the house on Jun 17, Bespoke also has an online tour of sorts, paying a visit to the Mogao Grottos in Dunhung, all the way in China’s northwestern Gansu Province.
Led by Dr. Neil Schmid, research professor at the Dunhuang Academy, the talks will take an in depth focus on the caves, their history, and the art and artifacts found within.
Beijing Postcards’ Summer Sale
If you fancy yourself a Beijing history buff or want to get your hands on some old maps and images of the capital, then the best place to look is the Beijing Postcards gallery on Jun 18 and 19.
Head down to Qianmen from 11am-6pm this Saturday and Sunday to peruse items from a recent inventory check at reduced prices. You’ll find old photographs, posters, and even doubles of original maps that the gallery is willing to part with.
