In an Act of Kindness, Taiba Shawarma Donates Food to Health Care Workers

In these difficult times it’s always amazing to see how communities pull together to support one another. This was certainly the case last week when local restaurant Taiba Shawarma decided to donate food to health care workers carrying out nucleic acid testing in Sanlitun. 

I reached out to Taiba Shawarma co-owner Miranda to find out more about this act of kindness. She spoke with me about how the current situation in Beijing has been especially hard for business owners, and how she, like all of us, hopes that we can get through the current situation as quickly as possible. 

Miranda believes the key to winning the battle against Covid is the medical personnel and health care workers. In light of this, she wanted to facilitate something that would help the workers, to show them people care for what they do. This gesture came in the form of a food donation.

I asked her what the reaction was from the workers when the received the food. “When the health care workers received our food, they were very happy and moved to tears," she said. "We told them that we really appreciate their hard work and that it is because of them that Beijing will pull through and conquer this epidemic soon.”

On whether Taiba has any future food donations planned, Miranda told me that they are planning on doing a food donation to a Beijing orphanage. “There are always orphaned or abandoned children who don’t get the love they deserve. We want to hold up an umbrella of happiness for them.”

Miranda is hopeful that despite the current difficulties, Taiba Shawarma can continue to grow and flourish. She told me that using high-quality fresh ingredients is key to Taiba’s approach to food no matter how the food market changes. 

For those unfamiliar with Taiba, they are a Middle Eastern restaurant with two locations in Beijing: one in Sanlitun (where their food donation came from), and one on Guijie near Beixinqiao station. In addition to shawarma they offer up a range of other dishes, such as falafel wraps, Turkish pizza, BBQ, and a variety of salads. If you want to try out some of their food, they are available on Meituan Waimai, JSS and Eleme.
