Well, Hot Dog! Costco is Coming to Beijing – But When?
Remember the time when massive crowds flocked to Costco to fight for a piece of pizza during its grand opening in Shanghai? But the Costco madness doesn’t stop there and continues to expand as the store lays out plans for new stores around the country – including in Beijing.
Maddeningly, we don't know when the store will land in the capital – but we do have an idea of where. According to reports by people "in the know," the warehouse retailer seems to have set their minds on two locations. One is Nanfaxin and the other is Houshayu, both in Shunyi District. Interestingly, if Costco decides to place their store near Houshayu area, it will be right near Sam’s Club, a competing retail warehouse that currently has three locations in Beijing.
Is the cluster in one location going to bring some fierce competition between those two giants? We aren’t sure. But if that happens, Beijingers will probably get to choose where to shop for hot dogs or sandwiches for where there is a Costco, there will be a Sam’s Club next to you.
With the opening of a Costco store in Beijing in the works, many people are wondering: will the store draw massive crowds to Beijing like it did in Shanghai two years ago? Will Beijingers have the same purchasing power compared to Shanghainese? We're here to watch!
